One kind of stainless steel gas patio heaters is also known as " mushroom" or  "umbrella" heater. The source of radiant heat in these heaters is a gas heated stainless steel chamber.

The heat is bounced off an aluminum reflector, which is a 360 degrees cone. When there is no moving air it heats about a 20-foot circular area. But in other conditions a12-15 feet area of heating is acceptable.

They have a high burning capacity of about 45,000 BTUs. But in order to avoid more heat from being wasted a confined space is necessary.

Wind may play havoc with such heaters. So extra attention should be paid to blocking the cold air as this may burn out the delicate parts of the heater. The wind may alter the direction of the flame leading to burn out of internal parts.

It is recommended that when the wind is more than 10mph, the heater should be shut off.

These heaters come in different varieties. They can be permanently fixed on a mount. They can also be fixed as an overhead fixture with a radiant cylinder and an umbrella attached to a bracket.
